This is a thoroughly researched, well-written book that spans a century's worth of world history viewed through the lenses of two of the most famous families of the 20th century. The author's expertise in writing about the Kennedys has been previously established with very well-received books, but for When Lions Roar he provides additional research and a fascinating, very detailed glimpse into the life and personality of Joe Kennedy (without whitewashing any of the facts) and Winston Churchill (again, presenting Churchill warts and all). While some of the most famous anecdotes about Churchill's witty repartee are repeated here, rather than being original discoveries, Maier has found a wealth of new material of great variety and depth. His revelations about the ways in which both Joe Kennedy and Churchill were more or less in cahoots with the wheeling and dealing of Bernard Baruch in ways that would most certainly be considered insider trading today are spelled out for the first time ever reported in down to the decimal point detail. He quotes extensively, with unsettling findings, from a young JFK's notes, letters, and other writings (as a Harvard college student and in his first years post-college) about his surprisingly pro-German views during the years leading up to WWII and even during the war. And he is the first biographer to have unearthed the disturbing position that Churchill took after Hiroshima and Nagasaki to try to induce the US to drop an atomic bomb on Moscow to eliminate Russia as a post war threat by eliminating their leadership structure.Maier has a superb flow to his narrative. He also manages to unearth kernels of insights and family connections -- especially about JFK's siblings and Churchill's children and their many failed marriages, with particular attention to the difficult relationship between Winston Churchill and his oldest son -- and presents very well-rounded portrayals of many others of the cast of characters (from FDR to Averill Harriman to Lord Beaverbrook, who served as Minister of Aircraft Production for Great Britain at Churchill's behest from 1940 to 1941 and significantly boosted aircraft production at a critical time). Readers will come away from this volume with a much better understanding of JFK's sister, Kick, Jackie O. (and why the Kennedy marriage was already floundering badly before JFK's death), and an entire host of British socialites and their sexual picadilloes. All in all, a fascinating read with detailed source notes to back up the substance of the book.I should mention that I own at least 15 books about Churchill, as well as more than a dozen volumes he wrote, and I still learned a lot about him and his mindset from Maier.
